The asbestos cement sheet remediation works are carried out in compliance with the
current regulations regarding asbestos disposal
(Legislative Decree 257/06, Ministerial Decree
475/92, Legislative Decree 195/06, Legislative Decree 81/08, Ministerial Decree on Health 14/05/96 and Ministerial Decree on Health

The salient phases are recalled in detail:

  1. Drafting and submitting a safety plan for asbestos abatement work to the local health authority (ASL) for approval and issuance of a permit;

  2. Certificate of suitability for workers;

  3. Establishing a work area on the construction site with barriers and appropriate signage to prevent access by unauthorized personnel; installing decontamination areas on the construction site and creating a designated area for waste storage;

  4. Classification analysis of materials to be removed;

  5. Application of a colored fixative and encapsulating product to avoid the release of fibers during the removal phases;

  6. Remediation of fibre cement sheets;

  7. Landing of the material, packaging, sealing and labelling of the waste;

  8. Final environmental monitoring to evaluate the release of asbestos fibres into the environment;

  9. Transport and disposal of special waste consisting of asbestos cement sheets.

Asbestos is dangerous

The high level of danger associated with asbestos stems from its fibrous consistency and chemical composition. Indeed, if the fibers are dispersed into the air and inhaled, they can cause serious illnesses, primarily affecting the respiratory system. Asbestos fibers can be released into the environment when the materials containing it are degraded and tend to crumble and produce fibrous dust under any type of stress. In the past, however, in Italy, this extremely dangerous material was widely used for the manufacture of thermal and acoustic insulation products, fireproof fabrics (including firefighter overalls), and alloys with other construction materials (lime, plaster, cement), and with certain polymers (rubber, PVC). Asbestos was primarily used in the production of asbestos-cement materials (fiber-cement sheets) in the form of roofing, chimney flues, pipes, water tanks, etc.
